To see James Sapp, and to see how he moves around and to see the ever-present twinkle in his eye, you would never know he is 90 years old.
His old uniform, the one he wore as a paratrooper in World War II. He wears it when he gives talks to schools and groups.
And the men who have followed in his steps in the Airborne have taken notice. Sapp got birthday greetings from Maj. Gen. Jim Huggins, commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, currently on duty in Afghanistan. He also got birthday wishes from Col. Mark Stock, commander of the 82nd’s 1st Brigade Combat Team. The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Sapp’s unit in World War II, is the backbone of the 1st BCT. Their motto is “Strike hold!” and those words were on the birthday wishes Sapp received from the battlefront in Afghanistan, compliments of his fellow devils in baggy pants.
