Don’t be alarmed at the apparatus sticking out of what are soon to be the new traffic signals on Springfield’s Laurel Street.

Those aren’t traffic cameras, City Manager Brett Bennett said. Those are sensors. The new traffic lights are part of the streetscape project that is relocating utility lines underground.

“The timing has been off,” Bennett said. “I’m sure everyone is as frustrated as I am.”

Until the power is switched over to the new masts, those traffic signals will go from red to green and vice-versa strictly on timing.

The streetscape effort also means new streetlights, fashioned to resemble old streetlamps.
