The results should be in soon on the county’s survey on backyard chickens.
On its Web site, Effingham County asked for responses from citizens if they want to see the ordinance changed to allow for backyard chickens. Joan Stanton had approached the commissioners back in May, asking them to consider allowing chickens in residential zones.
“We’ve gotten some of the surveys,” said County Administrator David Crawley, adding County Clerk Patrice Crawley is compiling the information.
“It was a lot of people,” she said of the number of responses.
Backyard chickens have been an issue in Chatham County, with the Metropolitan Planning Commission approving a motion to amend the animal control ordinance to include personal agricultural activities. Chatham County commissioners haven’t taken the matter up yet.
