No one had any idea what kind of turnout there would be for Tuesday night’s forum at South Effingham High School. Needless to say, it surpassed all expectations.
Those who were there got a glimpse of what the tax commissioner’s race is going to be like in the fall between the Republican candidate and the Democratic incumbent. It is now readily apparent the level of service and the incumbent’s schedule at the office are going to be issues this fall.
Sooner than that, the voters of Effingham County will determine if Jimmy McDuffie gets another term as sheriff or if Rick Gossett will succeed the six-year veteran in the position. In the headline event of the evening, both men handled their questions with aplomb.
I certainly hope, and judging by Tuesday night’s interest have every reason to believe, that the polls will be busy July 15.
What the forum didn’t broach this week were the nonpartisan races, since those will be decided in November. Another forum is likely in the offing, one that will be a little longer because of the number of races and candidates are.
I just hope there’s as much interest then as there was this week.
