I'm awakened at 4:30 in the morning with the Holy Spirit whispering the following words in my ear, "If a man ask thee to walk a mile with him, walk two." I quickly set up in the bed, and reached for my Bible. Sweetly nuzzled within THE BEATITUDES, is a verse overlooked, or maybe misunderstood. It's in the book of Matthew 5: 38-42, entitled: "Jesus Teaches About Revenge".
I want to focus of verse 41, "If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles." In Roman times a man could have worked all day, his family waiting for him to come home, and suddenly be seized by a Roman soldier to carry a heavy load. Recall the man of Cyrene, Simon who was compelled by the Romans to carry the cross of Jesus? (Matthew27:32)
No one likes to be made to do someone else's work, in addition to their very own! However, according to God's word, we're to do it, and with a cheerful attitude! Yikes! Proverbs 25: 21-22, says, "If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, thirsty-drink, for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you." I realize that's easier said, than done!
As Christians, we must be willing to go "above and beyond" the call of duty, for the sake of Christ. God's laws of retaliation are very different than man's laws of retaliation. An inconvenient truth, I know...yield to the Holy Spirit today and witness for yourself what He can do!!
