A call earlier this week from a reporter at another paper got me to thinking about a case that didn’t happen here but had some connection to the community.

The call was about an accused couple who may have connections to here. So I asked about another case — the murder trial of Jeffrey Moretz, father of the late Chad Moretz.

Jeffrey Moretz was found guilty of second-degree murder of his wife, Christine Moretz. He has been sentenced to life in prison. His wife was visiting a co-worker at a hospital when he showed up and shot and killed her. He turned the gun on himself but survived his self-inflicted wounds.

Jeffrey Moretz was in a jealous rage, according to accounts in the Naples Daily News, because his wife was having an affair with Christopher Serna, whose murder trial for the brutal 2011 death of Suzanne Bishop still is making its way through the courts.

Earlier this month, Effingham County grand jurors had a presentment on the death of Chad Moretz, who was shot and killed by police snipers in January 2013. Such a presentment is routine for police-involved shootings.
