A roundup of what some of our Congressmen are saying about President Obama’s new Afghanistan plan:
First, from Rep. John Barrow — “We don’t have all of the details on President Obama's plans for Afghanistan, but what we've heard so far is encouraging. I was just there last week, and here’s what I learned: The troops over there believe they have a job to do, and we need to give them what they need to get the job done. That means more boots on the ground to help them out as soon as possible. We can’t be over there forever, and with the right strategy we won't have to be. I’m going to do my best to make sure that the men and women we send over there have all of the resources they need while they’re there, and then get them home as soon as possible.”
Barrow, along with Sen. Saxby Chambliss and other Reps. Tom Price and Lynn Westmoreland, visited Afghanistan over the Thanksgiving holiday.
From Sen. Johnny Isakson — “I am glad the President has finally outlined his strategy regarding the war in Afghanistan, and I am glad he will supply General McChrystal with a majority of the troops he wanted. We need to give our commanders in the field the manpower they need to get the job done.
“We also must continue to put pressure on the Karzai government to end corruption and drug-trafficking.
“I am extremely concerned by the President’s proposal to set an arbitrary timeline for withdrawal because I think that sends the exact wrong signal to the enemy. We should pursue this mission to a successful conclusion and then bring our troops home.”
