If this is your first time to the southern states of India, then kickstart your tour by visiting these 7 places – they will absolutely blow your mind and make you come back for more.

1. Alappuzha

Alappuzha is called the Venice of the East, and rightfully so. With its pristine backwaters cobwebbing across fertile green plains of paddy and coconuts, Alappuzha is unlike anything you will ever see. Do remember to take the houseboat cruise in Punnamada Lake.

2. Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi is the first colonial establishment of India which bears marks left by the Dutch, Portuguese, British and some more. With a lovely sea beach, colonial forts and churches and the unique cantilever Chinese fishing nets in the waterfront to visit, your New York to Kochi flight will not go for waste.

3. Mysore

The former capital of Tipu Sultan is famous for the grand and majestic Mysore Palace which once belonged to the Wadiyar dynasty. There is the zoo, sandalwood museum and a couple of other places to visit as well, but nothing matches when the palace lights up every evening.

4. Coorg

Kodagu or Coorg in Karnataka is sometimes referred to as the Scotland of India because of its cool and misty climate. Coorg is known for picturesque mountain peaks and the fresh aromatic coffee beans they produce in tons.

5. Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram is dotted with ancient monuments, temples, chariots and vivid rock sculptures depicting mythological figures or events, like Arjuna’s Penance, contributed by the number of dynasties that ruled over Deccan. They are mostly UNESCO heritage sites and offer great insight into the age-old South Indian history.

6. Hampi

Hampi is home to a number of ancient ruins, rock structures and sculptures that date back to the 14th-15th century and stretches for around 25 kilometers. The small village in Karnataka is mostly visited because of its architectural grandeur, thanks to the fact that it was the last capital of the mighty Vijay nagar Empire of the south.

7. Vishakhapatnam

Vishakhapatnam is one of the oldest ports of India, flourishing with maritime and navy exhibits. It has a number of beaches, and the main city beach called Ramakrishna beach is home to a preserved submarine museum called Kursura. New York to Hyderabad flights are the best way to get to Vishakhapatnam.
If you have no direct flight to the south Indian city you want to visit, New York to Mumbai flights are always there to save you.
