Catch them ... if you can
I don’t have many complaints in life. But, in a matter of epic foreshadowing, this is one.
Trying to get the Braves on the radio at night, if I’m driving somewhere and I’m always driving somewhere, especially once the sun goes down ain’t as easy as it used to be.
Remember when the Braves were easy to find on TV? They were on TBS, every night, through bad seasons (a lot of them) and the good ones (fewer but nonetheless thrilling). You could even get them on radio fairly easily. When Sid Bream slid past Mike Lavalliere to win the pennant, we had the sound on the TV down. I had the speakers from the stereo on the back porch, with a long cord, pulled into the living room to hear Skip Caray on the call.
Now? The Braves have been shuffled off to three different broadcast outlets, none with the reach of the SuperStation. There’s SportsSouth, Fox SportSouth and Peachtree TV.
If you want to catch them on the radio, there isn’t an FM station within range anymore, not that I’ve found. The AM stations, one in Savannah and another in Statesboro, are serviceable — as long as the sun hasn’t gone down. But like so many AM wavelengths, they power down once it gets dark. And you can barely pick them up in Effingham County.
I have an old acquaintance who used to run several radio stations and you could always hear his voice during the station break in Braves games, telling you that you could find the Braves where you expect to find them — on his station. He doesn’t own the station anymore and the Braves aren’t on there anymore, either.
My MLB.TV purchase is one of the best deals I’ve had. I can listen to any major league game — and any radio broadcast, be it the home team’s or the visitors’ — and watch just about every game on the computer. Save for one.
The Braves. They’re blacked out.
